大時代 Big Times

Hong Kong is certainly going through turbulent times… Much like the famed drama 大時代 Big Times.

But hey, no matter the times, a good listening ear and friend is the best cure to tide the times! Best over good food!

And so, this place (straight from the drama!) is perfect! 甘露甜品 has not changed a bit! Still offering the same environment, good desserts and snacks, even the price hasn’t changed much! Definitely a HK treasure!

Yum Cha shop

Usually, you’ll go to a “tea-house” 茶樓 in Hong Kong for yum Cha. Recent years though, there are more small eateries that offer a more “boutique” experience!

徐記廚房 is one of them! The dim sums on offer are usually of a higher quality too! Hand crafted vs machine mass-produced!

Oh, these shops usually offer yum cha at day and night too! So if you crave some dim sum at night, you know where to go!

A desert place that needs no recommendation

Yup, this must be one of the most popular dessert places in Tuen Mun, so I won’t bother to recommend this place too much! The long queues at night already speak to its goodness!

They offer really tasty looking waffle and ice cream desserts, but the traditional Cantonese sweet soups (sweet potato, and Ai Yu Glutinous Balls) are spectacular too!

A firm favorite!

Joy Food Lounge is one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong! Yup, I certainly enjoy eating here!

The decor is very chill, think a mini air conditioned garden with IG-able fairy lights and neon signs! Food wise is superb too, I love the ever changing creative menus!

This time, I had the 蝦我!炒你!媽媽叫我蒜喇! Yup, it’s a spicy fried prawn linguini! You really gotta know Cantonese to understand the puns! This, and the blue cheese smoked salmon linguini and the mussels cooked in white wine with sourdough made for a very good meal!

Coffee: Yellow Shop or not?

As a refresher, “Yellow Shop” (黃店)in Hong Kong broadly refers to those that express support for the protest movement fighting to defend democracy and freedom.

How is a shop / eatery recognised as a yellow shop then? Mostly by word of mouth, and also verified by the shop’s facebook posts, or maybe through decorations in the shop!

Like this 87 coffee.. it’s not “officially recognised” by any of the apps, but it has a Post-It wall allowing visitors to write little messages of support or thoughts. In my book, that’s good enough! A shop that supports civil society is a good cafe in my opinion!

A strange little cafe

Ever watched “A Nightmare before Christmas”? Movies that just feel a little “off”, where the whole atmosphere is just a little perculiar, a little out of the ordinary?

Well, that’s definitely the vibe of Sickly Cafe… Climbing up here, is like dropping down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland! From the blue soda drinks, to the peppery asparagus mushroom pasta…

It’s such a rare find in Hong Kong, where mostly but chains make their stay and every mall looks about the same and have similar offerings. Let’s hope cafes like these stay in Hong Kong!

PS: if everything gets too weird, just go for a familar good coffee!

Cafe at Sai Ying Pun

There are soooo many cafes now in Sai Ying Pun, ever since the extension of the train line. The whole place has changed, from shophouses that serve as storage and as garages (ie: lower rent) to cafes and boutiques now…

Dear Neighbor is one such place… They have a little loft, which was probably used as storage in the old days.. now, with a long table and some soft floor mats, it now serves as a cosy gathering spot for those in the neighborhood!

The owner is very friendly! He doubles, triples as the chef / barista / waiter! So yes, it’s a bit hectic as he runs around, but hey, it’s like eating at your neighbour’s!

Cafe in Serenity #3

Found yet another hidden treasure in Hong Kong! This time, it’s like stepping back in time, into a French secret garden!

Well, to be fair, Parc does sell French antiques, so sitting here IS going back in time!

This is a lovely cafe to come with your girly friends, have a French high tea, and soak up the French loveliness! Oh, did I mention they can do weddings here too? What a great place!
